Congratulations, Madam Vice President

One day, it won’t be so momentous. One day, watching a woman raise her hand and take the oath of office as our vice president won’t make me cry.

One day, a Black and South Asian woman, a daughter of immigrants, serving at the highest levels of government won’t be so remarkable.

But not today.

Today, Kamala Harris is the first.

She will swear the oath on a Bible owned by Thurgood Marshall, the first Black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

She will be sworn in by Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

“I may be the first,” Kamala says. “But I won’t be the last.”I’ve never been surer of that than today.

Congratulations, Madam Vice President.
